Ghost shrimp better than Rcs at breeding with guppies?

I've had Rcs for over a month in my 55g I thought even with the mass amounts of hornwort and other plants that I wouldve seen babies by now even with my guppies. I know I'm rushing the rcs but i can't help wondering if
Ghost shrimp are more ideal for my setup.

Also can they better compete for food against ramshorn snails than Rcs?

Given that the period the female rcs carry eggs before them hatching out is roughly a month, give or take a few days depending on params your just started on breeding. Keep in mind also that many females drop their first batch or two of eggs. Also they wouldn't breed right away unless they were mature, and even then its unlikely they'd breed for the first week or two, adult shrimp are notorious for a) not shipping well and b) taking longer to settle into a new tank than juvies.

Plus, baby shrimp are tiny and if you've got enough cover for them to hide from guppies then I doubt you'll have an easy time seeing them without tearing up the tank (which I would discourage, the whole godzilla effect scares them out of hiding where they're easier prey for the fish).


So personally id give them another couple months before counting it a failure.

Ghost shrimp go through a larval stage. Many types of ghost shrimp require brackish water to raise the young, can be a bit of chore to breed.
Stick with rcs, a lot easier to care for and breed, just add water and wait:hmm3grin2orange:

Do you know what "saddled" and "berried" female shrimp look like? If so, have you seen either?

I checked my old records. When I got RCS, it took a month before I saw any of the females carrying eggs, and a month and a half total before I found any babies. Give it some time.

thanks for the replies guys yea i figured i was rushing things. i figured a 4ft long wall of hornwort plus a bunch of plants in front will do the trick for the shrimp babies, but with more guppies than shrimps i was (and i am still a little) afraid none of the shrimplets will make it.

i know its a little off topic but would a ghost shrimp species that breeds in fw be better at competing with ramshorn snails for food? i read they eat ramshorn snail babies and the snail control would be nice, though i wouldnt want to get rid of them entirely. so would such an arrangement be more viable than rcs and ramshorn snails?

While shrimp do eat algae, it would take a huge number of them to really control any large algae issues. Snails would really out compete shrimp for algae and other excess food in a tank. Hard to keep snail numbers in control.

ya i bait regularly and i keep things clean managing to keep the population fairly steady this way and i enjoy them, though i would like to drop a couple of algae wafers in without breaking it into pieces and expect the shrimp to get some, and i could do with a few less. i feel ghost shrimp might be a better fit from what i gather, just not sure if that feeling is grounded in reality :0) thanks again for the reply. oh and i have a bn for some algae control, and the rest is up to me
