My 5 inch male nic has developed a nuchal hump practically overnight. I'm not sure if that's common since in all the photos I've seen, none of the males had one.

Is this normal?

I have heard some people say that their cichlids hump size will change throughout the season. I'm assuming this could be driven by hormones and/or breeding? Do you have any before and after shots? Interesting.

Both my male and female have bumps (males is obviously bigger). They did kind of pop up overnight, I wish they would go away.

Here's a pic of them. They're not huge bumps, but they're a bit bigger now.

Your guys is a lot more pronounced than mine. Have you been doing water changes with the waste from a nuclear reactor?

Did you notice any mini-crowbars laying in the substrate? Maybe one of his fellow tank mates whacked him with one. Unsuccessful mugging?

I will have to check. My acara has been looking rather dodgy of late

lol, I have seen them with humps, but that's a big hump for a juvie nic. could be the result of inbreeding, or maybe he's just a stud.

does he have a female around?

I dont think its inbreeding. He came from non related f1 parents. Theere is a female in the tank

Clearly when heads swell up like that its one of two things... either you've been giving him a fine education.... (hanging out with schools/leaving educational TV on) OR.... he's received too many complements.

In either case, you have totally ruined his chance of ever buying a stylish hat.

Oh no. I hope he doesn't hold that against me. Fedoras are back in style this season. last year I got him a Panama hat, but he found it a bit culturally insensitive.
