In all my time fishkeeping I've never seen this stuff before. Is it some type of algae? It's in my quarantine tank that I just switched over from gravel to sand, I also used the same sand in another tank and that tank is squeaky clean. The light is hardly ever on in that tank because it gets so hot in that room. What the heck is it and how do I get rid of it, its everywhere.

Only two things come to my mind:

Either you have Hair Algae
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
Crtl+F Enter: Hair Algae forms around the base of slower growing plants
This will take you right to this picture:

and a description of it.

Or you have Fungus:

How can it be fungus? I'm treating the tank with maracyn. Ahhh I'm so confused lol. It's not on any of the fish. Just on the sand and decorations.

I don't know what type of algae, but in my 5.5 gallon experiment tank I through in a ton of fish food and after a long time it rotted to look very closely to that.So I'm thinking it could be like the decaying food in my 5.5 gallon.

Edit
I'm either with myself or bignellm.

In the bottom right hand of screen next to the pot, those white tufts with darker white centers, look like they have what's in the image below. This diagram:

Anyway, that's what it looks like to me.

Maybe the fungus built up resistance? I don't really know for sure. Is my educated guess at this point.

Oh man, that stuff took less than a week to spread all over like that. I'll add some maracynoxy (for true fungus) and see what happens. If it was fungus wouldn't it be on the fish too?

From my understanding it won't latch onto fish and cause harm unless the fish are already stressed.

Anyway, that's what I was reading in some other articles and forums.
You also said the light is hardly ever on? If that's the case, you probably have fungus, as it can grow in the dark.
