07-30-2011, 12:50 AM
Is there any way I could make a DIY sponge filter or DIY air pump. I'm handy and I don't really want to spent over $50 if possible. But I will go over if it's cheaper than retail and fish stores. Thanks!

What size of tank are you talking about ?

You can pick up sponge filters pretty cheap ( just one example below)

5 or 10 gallon RCS tank I'm going to get. The air pump would be for either my 38 or the 5 or 10 gallon tanks. Well 38 for sure.

I don't know about a pump but DIY sponge filter videos are on Youtube, One of the better design/explanation is by " TheMI8CH " & it's way WAY under your budget.

Look it up. :22:

The thing Is that I don't even have a air pump.

The thing Is they are cheap.

The other thing Is that when you are finished watching the you tube video it might also be a good idea to put "Diy air pump for aquarium" into that bar at the top of the page and .... Well, Try it and see.

You can get a sponge filter for like $5 shipped on ebay. It might be worth checking into

I have. I just really would like an air pump for less than a lot of money.

The thing is, I think that two of the above have websites that you could link to. Try it and see.

Honestly I don't know how to do links. That's the reason I didn't earlier. I'm kind of new to the website and haven't figured it out yet. Sorry!

Is it just coping and pasting?

07-30-2011, 02:54 AM
Yep. Copy the search bar, paste in your post. ;-)

07-30-2011, 02:55 AM
That's what I thought. Thanks! Now I won't feel completely dumb!

If i recall correctly you have several tanks [Or will have].

Are they in close proximity to each other or different rooms? The reason I ask is that if they are all close together you can get one large air pump and a gang valve (http://www.petsmart.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=gang%20valve&origkw=gang+valve&sr=1) to split the air [so it goes to the individual tanks].

If they are in separate rooms you will have to get several [probably cheaper] pumps to run the individual tanks.

i like the gang valve idea :P

I use them in every room I have multiple tanks in. thumbs2:

Ya. I can do that I guess. I'm sure my lfs will have some in there sale box. (which is like everything! :) I might be going today! So I'll check it out. I know they had some 4 valves on the pumps already for I think 80 percent off! It's only maybe $10. I'll look for some like that.

So there is no possible way to make an air pump?

07-30-2011, 01:46 PM
Oh sorry 850r... They will be in the same room. But I will get different pumps for the different tanks. I already have 1 in my 2 gallon Berta tank.

Would I need a pump? I planning on planting it. Would the plants get overwhelmed by all the air? Would I need to get a diffuser for my 38? Thanks

This is becoming sooooo confusing and so much harder than it needs to be!

Why would you want to spend $50 to "make" an air pump and a sponge filter when you could buy the airline, air pump and sponge for probably $20?

If it's less complicated to go to the store, pick up a small filter for a small tank, then do that. A small whisper filter is about $7.

Please read your PM at the top right of this page.

I didn't know until after I started the forum on how inexpensive the filters are. The pumps are also cheap at some places.

Sorry but I do not understand WHY you did not know this when you were given dozens of links all listing prices.

I really forgot. And I really wanted to make something.
