1. Put male and female platies together

2. When female gets a large dark spot at the bottom of her abdomen, separate her into another container with hornwart in it

3. After she releases the fry, move her back into the main tank

4. Enjoy your new fry.

^^^^ +100 to this advice.
How to make them breed, add water, add fish, and bingo. Fry in a few weeks.
I also find hard water puts Platy in the mood and more female than male. Sexing them is straight forward. Pretty much the same way as mammals. See a fin that is tightly held to body and looks like a penis, is a male. See no fin of this description, is female. Alot of females you buy happen to be already pregnant at time of purchase as well.
Good luck:22:

Here's a picture of the one I call "Big Mama"
As you can see in the pic, this is late stage pregnancy. She exhibits the classic swimming sideways "P" shape. As she comes closer to term, you will see little black dots inside her, the Fry's eyes. In darker colored platy, you would not be able to see the fry, however, she will still show the swimming "P" shape and will get darker around her rear just before birth.

Sorry about the blurriness, she was hard to catch on my camera phone

Well, it's not late stage if she is. The red area near the rear is there. I would say this is a mid-stage pregnancy. She's definitely not caring tons of fry yet, as mine do. I could be wrong, if this is her first pregnancy, and as the signature P I see isn't quite there yet.

That would be about my guess, week and half at latest, but week conservatively.

She needs to go into a tank by herself and removed when she has her young or the babies will be eaten.

Yes Sir. I wasn't sounding definite before, as I'm used to seeing the eyes. Color on yours is a bit darker. Also, I wasn't seeing the protruding belly as I'm used to seeing.

Hard to say. She's not bulging like a late stage, ready to pop platy. That area on her is not very close to the birthing canal either. Makes me think there's a bit of developing that needs to occur first. As you seen in my pic, the blurry one, she's seriously bulging, eyes inside, but fry aren't near her rump. I'm not moving her yet (If I could) on the reason I think she's got about a week left. I have heard a livebearer from the rear may get a squared off read end, just before delivery. I do know from experience too, that if you stress her, she'll deliver some immediately. (big water change, etc.)

Shes Pregnant. The babies from what I can tell from pic are just forming. I will put it this way. Stage 1, Pregnant. Stage 2, carrying almost ready Fry. Stage 3, Holy heck move the mamma, she's getting ready to deliver.

I think she's a solid stage 2, moving closer to stage 3. I hear in stage three, her rump area squares off, but haven't ever seen this happen in Real World.

I am too. lol. thumbs2:
Only had my tank up for 2 months now. Had 3 (litters?) already. If worried she'll pop before you can move her, make sure there is lots of small nooks and crannys in your tank for small things to hide. dense plants are a +

Your in good shape then. Relax, if you miss it, a good number will probably grow up in the tank. Then as they get bigger, ya can fish em out.
