Any suggestion for an air pump that works and is quiet (if one exists). I have a second hand one that vibrates unless I hold it really tight in my hands... I though it was broken but after reading some reviews it seems that a lot of the air pumps are loud...
Also, is it better to use an air stone, or let the bubbles rise from the tubing directly. Aren't fish scared of bubbles?
Thanks, Dasha

Check the DIY section. I have a How-To on how to make your airpumps quieter.
Its cheaper than buying an air pump.

My Azoo air pump is very quiet, and I have heard that Renas are good, but haven't had one myself yet.
Ceramic air diffusers are the best, they provide a very fine mist that greatly improves aeration.
I have one of the big Rena air pumps. Very, very quiet compared to the others I have tried.
