sand or gravel

When keeping central american cichlids does it matter whether you use sand or gravel as the substrate? I've always used gravel but fancy using sand as i'm not using under gravel filters?

It does not make any difference. But make sure that it is not pointed or coarse that will hurt them, Remember that some cichlids like to move around the gravel so avoid gravel with pointed ends.
