How long does it take to go away. I have never had it before. I took all my 55 gal down and put them in 3 75 gal. about 6 week ago. Used the same filters and substrate. never had it in any of my 55. only thing that has changed from the 55's to the 75's it the type of light. the 75's came with a T8 light that has sun glow on it. it is a very brite light. I went from 8 hr a day to 6 hr a day on hoping this will help.

It could be a few weeks up to a couple months, I think. Are these brand new tanks? I've read that the diatoms actually feed off of something given off by brand new silicone seals, so they'll flourish until that's used up.

But then, I had a pretty considerable outbreak of them when I set up my first tank, which was a previously used 29g.

You can wipe them off very easily with a sponge. You just have to keep doing that until they stop coming back.

That's what I was going to suggest. Im currently battling diatoms in my 10g as well.

mine took approx a month and a week or two. It covered my plants, tank walls, rocks etc. I only cleaned the front glass. it's unsightly, but the diatoms will fade away.

on another note, as soon as my diatoms were slowly disappearing, i started getting green algae growing on the back tank wall only. that lasted for approx two months and a bit, now it's also disappearing as well, because my numerous established plants are sucking up the nutrients.
