Those are what we call pond snails. They most likely hitchhiked with your plants like you suspect. They reproduce very easily, especially when there is an abundant food supply. Looks from the picture like you have a pretty severe infestation.
Assassin snails will eat them but with that many pond snails they're going to breed faster than the assassins can eat them. I'd recommend a few things:
Manually remove as many pond snails as you can.
One trick that may work for you is to put a piece of lettuce in the tank at the end of the day. By morning it should be covered in snails, and you can just pull it out and get rid of a bunch of snails that way. Repeat as desired.
Consider whether you are overfeeding your fish. Those pond snails must have plenty of food to eat to breed that fast.
Vacuum your substrate. Looks like there's a lot of brown gunk under the gravel... that's snail food. Keep up with the vacuuming and keep your substrate clean.
If you do all that, you ought to be able to reduce the pond snail population far enough that the assassins ought to be able to keep them in check. There are also some fish that eat snails, but without knowing what size your tank is and what fish you currently have, I wouldn't advise you to add any fish to deal with snails.

I hace been removing them manually as of today and got about three quaters out I'm guessing so I hope between that and the lettuce trick we can manage them effectivly I have just bought the 7 assasisn snails as well to help, I have a 35 gallon tank with a betta, platys 1 crab and swordtails...was my sons tank that he neglected and I'm trying my hand at it and have found it very fun so far to enjoy them...we have 3 newborn platys we just found......but as you saw we neglected the snail problem till now and it got outta hand
