Hey folks, new member and new aquarist here!

I'm wondering can someone help identify my fish? I just bought a selection of "beginner" fish, and as I was so pre-occupied with it all I forgot to ask what was what! I know there are a couple of regular goldfish in there, but I'm trying to identify the two small guys with the black stripe, and the guy with the white/black/orange patches.

Apologies for the picture quality, I couldn't find batteries for my camera so I just used my iPhone for now.

Thanks!

1. Penguin Tetra
2. Some kind of goldfish

What size tank please? You understand that most goldfish are coldwater while the tetras are tropical?

I believe the multicolored goldfish is called a Shubunkin, but it's a normal common goldfish for all practical purposes (care requirements, growth potential, etc).

GM72. Thanks for the reply. The store I bought from had them in with regular goldfish and said they were suitable for coldwater.. They're a reputable seller so I presumed he knew what he was talking about. I guess it would be best to return them. The tank is a 6 gallon or so, can't remember exactly.

BRHINO. Thanks also! I was wondering if it was just a breed of goldfish or a different fellow entirely, thanks for solving that one. :ssmile:

By looking at the tank I have a fear that it is maybe a 5 gallon hex? Would be too small for any of the fish if I'm right.

What size would you reccommend? Again, I only bought it under the advice of the guy in the shop.. he's not a fish specialist it seems!

Penguin tetras grow to be 3-4 inches, so you'd want something in the 15-20 gallon size, or more if you have space/money.

Common goldfish grow to be over a foot long. They need a very big tank, or ideally an outdoor pond. It's true that there are many people that keep goldfish in tanks your size or smaller, but it makes for a very poor environment for them and they don't end up living very long at all.

The calico fish is a Shubunkin goldfish.

The ones with the stripe, I couldn't tell you, but others here have identified them for you.

Those fish with the black strip look very much like Debauwi catfish, especially the way they are positioned. Hard to tell, but they very well might be penguin tetras too.

You should have at least a 30g for goldfish. Most goldfish grow surprisingly large.
