So in a pinch could you use polyester fiber fill to stuff in a Whisper 20-40 instead of buying replacement filter bags. I'm not interested in using carbon in my new tank and I really am looking for a cheaper alternative to the brand name replacement filters.
I already have a sponge type filter that came with it that I think is supposed to be the bio filter part of the system. I washed it out and will reuse that but I need something else to hold it in if I'm not gonna use the Whisper filter packs.

I use it in all of mine without the pouch. I will say that Walmart poly stuff is not very good and pieces get loose in the tank. PetSmart has some good stuff or well as the filling in pillows.

I have a bag of it left over from sewing projects. Would that work just as well as long as its not smaller bits?

We go fishing in oklahoma several times a year. The guy we go with built his own bait live well. A bilge pump takes water and pumps it out a T peic at the top of the tank, and then the water trickles back down through several layers of polyfill. He doesnt use the loose kind, its the kind that comes in a sheet.

I think you'd be fine with that as long as you had a continuous piece. Try it and see how it goes!

Is this filter a hang on filter, I have a whisper 60 that is hangon, and they have bio bags that clip onto a plastic frame, I just buy wadding (a sheet of fibre stuff used for padding in dressmaking), cut it to the same size as the frame, and clip this on the frame, at about $5 a metre, it makes very cheap replacement filters.
