I have owned this fish since Jan. 2010, and have only recently managed to get a couple of photos. I got a good look at the fish today and believe it to be male based on the cheek spurs, the pleco is right around 9-10".

the piece of cholla is 8" and the albino BN is 4" for a size comparison...Royals are huge plecos

Sorry the pic quality sucks, I didnt take time to change lenses or settings :14:

Thanks all! I agree Royals pack a hefty price tag, I was lucky enough to get this fish for a steal on aquabid. Especially since LFS around here charge $50 for 2" babies. I am hoping that since he has gotten so large he will start to come out more, I have honestly went weeks and not seen the fish at all...it is amazing how something this large can hide so well in a tank.

yeah they seem to blend pretty well. Where do you live that they're $50 for a 2"? For around 4-5" they're around $40 here in southern california. But anywho, great buy! especially if you got it for a steal! How is dealing with aquabid, I go on there from time to time but since its not an actual breeder selling the fish i've been slightly weary (even though i've gotten fish off ebay hah!).

I got him from snookn21...which is an importer on Aquabid as well as various fish forums. He is a great individual to deal with, I would say just watch seller feedbacks and make your choice from there...Aquabid works much like Ebay.

Awesome! thank you for the feedback on it, I'll have to look more into buying fish there.

Wow,that is expensive for a royal, around here they go for 25 to 30 dollars in stores. That is 2 to 4 inchers.

The shading of your pleco and the brightness of that green is just awesome. I have never seen that colourful a pleco in my travels. Thanks for sharing MCHRKiller.:22:

Ah, you cheated, buying him that big to start with. I always go for the (less expensive) juvies and spend years growing them out. Aren't the royals wood-eating Panaques like the L-204 Flash?

The natives call royal panaques 'canoe eaters', so they do indeed eat wood. The one I've had for 12 years has gnawed through several large pieces of driftwood, but is very partial to peeled and cored apples.

The fish was about 7" when I got him, however I paid less for him than 2" babies here...plus I skipped the years of growing thing. They are def. wood eaters, you can hear mine gnawing on wood a room away. I have tried to feed mine peeled apples and darn near any veggie or melon I can force to sink...he wont have any of it. Only eats algae wafers and wood. The BNs love all the random fresh produce I toss in so atleast that is something.

my royals seem to love the skin of zucchini and watermelon the best. never blanched either, just raw.
