I would try googling CYANOBACTERIA to find some pics to see if that may be what is going on.
Other than that, could you provide the following info:
-the type of lighting you have (watts and K rating)
-how long you have your lights on for
-your water parameters (ammoinia, nitrite, nitrate, and PH)
-if your tank gets direct sunlight at all, and if yes for how long
-what type of routine maintenance do you complete on this tank
:worthless:
As well as checking out the pics Cliff mentioned, It would be worth a 1000 words apiece to post some shots of what you have going on.
The answers offered tend to be more accurate that way.

You need to be more clear. In the first post you said green stuff invading your sand. Now you are saying green water. Two different things with two different problems. That pic is discusting. Lordie.
Thread moved to Algae Forum.
+ 1 LH, Apparently the clarity of the initial post matches the water. Not sure how anyone should have known that intuitively but prob identified..

looks like blue green algae. probably you are over feeding.most of the time it is an indicator of poor water quality. siphon the gravel and do regular water changes,at the same time regulate the amout of the food you adding. it will eventually go away.

The pic you have posted is certainly canyo. Althought it looks like algae, it's really not your typical algae. The below sticky explains what it is and how to get rid of it
