Long story short, I will be recieving a free 5g tank within the next few weeks. It is an eclipse corner system with a faulty light in the hood. The light in my mom's tank died, and Marineland was very helpful and ended up sending us a complete system as a replacement. She is just going to switch the hoods around, because replanting, etc would be a major pain. She said I could have the extra tank and non-functional hood.

I am considering a few options. Planted or saltwater. Saltwater is gonna be pushing it a bit more than planted, so I will probably just plant the tank.

I am thinking about doing a southeast asian picotope (i think thats copyrighted by JBJ for one of thier small tanks...dont tell them i used it :P). Iwagumi hardscape (zen rock garden type thing) with a smallish school of rasboaras and maybe a few snails to keep algae under control.

The first problem witht he eclipse system is that the lighting is inadiquate, so its not a big deal to me that it is broken. The second problem is that the in hood filter obstructs light. Anyone think it owuld be possible to remove the top rim and structure for hood and filter etc and just make it a rimless tank? Then use a desk lamp or hanging fixture over the tank.

Right now, I am just looking for suggestions. This will only be my second tank and the first one I have really had the opportunity to 100% plan from the ground up.

Congrats on the new tank!

Can't help you too much...esp. without seeing one in front of me...

But you might want to check the wiring on the hood...it might be something very minor and easily fixed...may as well give it a shot...

A lot of faulty fluorescent lights can be traced to the starter, but maybe this isn't a fluorescent? If it is incandescent, check the wiring to the ballast. It probably is a relatively easy fix if you know what you are looking at. If you run into trouble diagnosing the problem, just post some pics and maybe we can help you out that way.

yeah, I might try to fix the light. It is a screw in incandescant fixture, however, It would not be great for a planted aquarium which I am hoping to go for with this tank.

Alot of times, lights connections are not put together very well. Open it up, and check all of your connections, expecially at the switch.

You could find a nice compact fluorescent bulb for the 5 gallon.

GE makes 20 watt daylight bulbs (6700 k) that would be great for the planted tank.
