View Full Version : Gill Issues....

I have multiple areas of my new betta that i've been watching, but one thing that has been bothering me more than anything is around his gills. The gills are looking a big raggid and almost look like the area has been cut a bit. I have been looking around for information/pictures that would maybe show some examples of gill problems, but can't find anything. Does anyone have any ideas of what this might be or where I can find pictures of gill problems?

Or maybe I should be looking for pics of normal gills and comparing?

I wish I had a better camera to show you all pics, but my camera doesn't have a macro option and my pictures come out blurry if I get too close.

It might be a disease called Gill Fluke

might be just a bit of gill damage, nothing too serious. it could be flukes if you see worms

Do the gills look ripped? and when they breathe do they open more?

Maybe this will help. Here's a picture of Ketchup, my new crowntail. I got him for Mother's Day this year. You can see his a bit of his Labyrinth organ kinda hanging down from his gills. Is that what you're seeing on your betta?
There's also a good picture of a betta here in the articles at http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/bettafish/anatomy.php

I'm pretty sure that's normal. You're just seeing a bit of the Labyrinth organ. That's the thing they flare out with when they see another betta or get startled.

Oh thats awesome! I'm so glad thats not a bad thing, I kept wondering whether or not it was hurting him, I think thats why I was bothered by it so much. Thank you!!!! :)
