View Full Version : Red Tailed Catfish or Tiger Shovelnose?

Have the option of either of the above catfish but not sure which would be the most rewarding to keep. Both are around 20" at the moment.

Any advice?

What size tank do you have - the redtail will probably never stop growing.

Seriously it will easily get to 4 feet.

Yeah...so unless you want to set up an 8-10' wide tank, you might want to stick with something a tad smaller...

Your best bet with either of those fish would be a heated outdoor pond. The tiger will probably get to be 30" long and they are best kept in pairs. The redtail will get to be 4 feet long.

The tigers are supposed to be pretty amazing when kept in pairs in a large enough pond.

I saw a fully grown tiger at my lfs..they had him cramped in something like 25g. He couldn't even move, everytime i go his is the same diagnole position! In the next tank they have a 5 inch tiger that i almost bought, but now that i see what happens: no way, ever!

They have a 7" redtail cat at my LFS and a tiger shovel nose of about 4 inches. They also had an arowana and they tried to tell me they would be fine in my 55g!! Don't believe what you LFS says about some of these fish.

Arowanas are fine in 55s...for the two month quarantine while you double check the parameters are right in your indoor pool.

Full grown tiger shovelnose are about three feet, I don't think it was really full grown if it was in a 25.

One of the stores near me has foot long blue/silver arrowanas they are gorgeous - I really really really need an indoor pond!

I live on the third floor so it will be a while till mine gets finished - I'm working on it though

Have been out and about today looking at pond. Thinking of doing the easy option and getting a preformed pond liner. Can get one about 3.6m x 2.4m x 0.75 meters, about £750. Didn't think this was too bad, any comments on size?

Not bad at all - you may want to go for a full meter deep - that way there you can definitely have 3/4 of a meter of usable depth but the fish you are looking at would probably be pretty happy with the length and width.

They would probably be pretty happy with the depth also - but its easier to add a little bit JIC now than it would be down the road
