Has anyone come up with a formula for cleaning glass that is really stained. I bought an used aquarium with a half glass top an the top is badly stained with that white crusty type material. I've tried vinegar and water and also pure ammonia. Some has been removed but not all of it. Am I expecting to much thinking it come completely clean?

Last time I cleaned an old tank I filled it up outside, added some bleach and let it sit for a day or two.I then used a flat razor and scraped all the glass down.Drain the water and use a mild scrubber to clean it some more.
This got most of the cloudiness off the glass. When its full its is real hard to tell.

Scrape it with a razor as mentioned already. Then get plain old table salt and a dishrag, use the salt as an abrasive and keep it just wet enough to form a past. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Soak them in a sink full of VERY hot water & vinegar(50/50 mix) overnight. Repeat. Should come off w/ very little effort. The trick is to let them soak for a day or two(or three). Works w/ filter lids encrusted w salt, too.

I lay my tanks on their side on the floor, pour some vinegar on the area's that are crusty and allow it to soak in for 5 minutes. Comes right off. My water was very hard at my last residence and I cleaned my filters, etc, by soaking in vinegar.

If all the previous mentioned stuff doesn't work, as a last resort you can try using CLR. Clean it very well afterwards.
