I have 5 red eared slider turtles and about 40 goldfish in a 1000 gallon pond. I have had the same setup for about 10 years. The water quality has been great but I have to spend 1-2 hours every week to clean the filter. I adapted a 3' tall cartridge filter for this use by removing the cartridge and using about 20 12" by 12" by 1" filter elements that are used in smaller pond filters that hold 1 element. When the turtle are hibernating for about 6 months, I only need to clean the filter once or twice in 6 months. But the rest of the year when the turtles are eating, I need to clean it every week or the water will barely flow.

Does anyone know about using a sand filter for turtle ponds? I like the idea of being able to backwash the dirt out of the filter in a few minutes (like I do for my pool) instead of spending 1-2 hours every week to take apart the filter and hose off all of the filter elements. Thanks in advance for your help.
