Can you put the net in the water and use your finger to try to gently push his fins through? I'm sorry I can't help more!! I'm sure someone can give you better advice!

grab and hold him as gently as possible and pull the net off of him - if its possible get someone to help and have one person hold him with both hands while the other disengages the net from his fins

check to seee if he got injured and use some stress coat on him

Cut the net. They only cost a buck.......well, more than that. But in a panic, cut the net. LOL

nobody is here to help at all. both spines are VERY badly entagled. I can't pull him out.

And the sucky part is: He was stressed and I netted him to give him peace and quiet.

how long can he stay out of water?

I'm thinking of putting him on the kitchen table in a puddle and using a razor to cut him out.

Well sorry, but you didnt say that he was that stuck.. Don't take the net out of the water. Leave it inside, Cut the net around the fish, so she can swim and it will come out as she is swimming.

Put the net back in the tank for a minute, then cut him out. Use a razor.

He's Free!!

I pout him in a saucer of tank water and clipped the net away with fingernail clippers.

He made some horrible, electrical sounds at me a few times, and stabbed me a little, but I got him free.

Unfortunately, he is back in the SAME tank as he was before.

All I accomplished was stressing him out MORE and leaving him with a bit of green net stuck to his fin.

Blasted net. I had no idea. How did they manage to net him at the LFS without this happening?

ETA: He looks happier than he has in days? WTH?!

waiting, waiting.....I can't take the stress ......hurry up

LOLOLOL Oh, the life of us fishkeepers.

Dang. I hope your dog doesn't get hit by a car. By the time you post here, the poor fella will be in a bad way.

Sorry....now I'm teasing.

LOL that's why I named my Chocolate Dachshund ... "Nestle"

Just in case he got hit by a car .... (netsle crunch?)

Yeah, I'm just kidding, too.

(His name is Moose/Mousse).

Seriously, the Pictus was better off in the net in the tank while I posted than if I had not .... I was just gonna cut his fins off below the net and toss him in antibiotics.

hopefully the leftover net will slough off.

BTW, how DO you net a Pictus?

I remember (NOW) having a similar thing happen to a Bala Shark of mine, 13 years ago. I clipped the fin off below the net with fingernail scissors.

It made a full recovery. Wonder if I should have done that today?

I apologize to myself for spamming my thread, but

YOU GUYS

The pictus is practically dancing in the tank that had him so droopy just a few minutes ago.

Can fish learn to appreciate their lives?

I seriously may never be able to eat fish again.

I'm .... astounded.

What i have seen done/done back when i had a pictus, was to use a brine shrimp net, and then very carfully grab him behing his pectoral fins, just behind the dorsal fin. Make sure to add stress coat to the tank after handleing as well.

The "electric sounds" are the trademark of the catfish, and are nothing to worry about.

Glad you got your pictus free!

I think stress coat is also a water conditioner, but i have some stuff with "alontion" (sp?) that says it helps to build a healthy slime coat. Dunno if they are the same, but with the semi rough handleing, it couldnt hurt.

When I got my featherfins, they were making a weird sound like a vibration. The girl had to put one of them in 3 different bags. He tore a hole in the bag everytime she put him in a new one. Sometimes I wonder why they don't use a plastic container with a lid.

That's what I added just now. 10 gallon dose to a 30 gallon tank.

Pictus is practically FROLICKING. Devouring his food, as well.

(I'm concerned, though, that the tank might have TB. Should I start a new thread for that question?)

That reminds me! I trained both of my spiney eels to swim into a specific ornament if the tank is disturbed. I use the ornament to transfer them, rather than roughing them up with a net.

Wonder if I can do the same with my pictus, or construct a little net of drilled plexiglass or something ...

edit: patent pending if i figure it out LOL!

Update all the net fell of his fin. He's back to normal now.

Thank you all so much. I was either going to mutilate him or put him down.

I'm glad you got him free!:19:

And now you know why you never net pictus...

...what you is get a plastic container big enough...and make holes in the bottom of it so the water flows through...

...and then use that to 'cup' him...

Maybe try fashioning a stick/handle out of a coat hanger and hot gluing it onto a little cup with holes in it. lol

I got a small brine shrimp net for my betta today, it has verrrrrry tiny holes in it. Have you tried using that type? Maybe be easier on the fins than a regular one.

Hubby promised to help me engineer a proper device for capturing spiney fish next time.

Also, the pictus is acting so strangely. He is expressing his joy to be alive, no kidding.

I love to eat fish, but I doubt I'll be able to do it for a very long time.

Pictus is CELEBRATING. No kidding. Absolutely gleeful.

Wow sorry, I got tickled. I had a very large pleco that I was gonna get rid of to the pet shop. He got entangled in my net for the longest, I finally just reached in and got him out but of course, every time before I do anything with my fish, I rub alcohol on my hands and wash it off with clean water. O and I guess I am weird, I still love to eat fish. MMMMMMM!! Hehe.

A little off topic. but khuli, your post reminds me of a fishing trip about 20 yrs ago I have never forgotten.

Me and a few mates went fishing (I was just 19 back then LOL), fish was not biting, we was drinking, quite a bit, well I had a handline in, all of a sudden it went crazy, I dragged it in to the bank, next minute one of my mates who was standing beside me, all excited, runs in the water, scoops his hands under this foot long fish and throws it on the bank LOL, well, it was an ealtail catfish, and these guys have a defence mechanism in the way of a very painfull venom that they release from spikes under there fins, when skinning, most people use pliers very carefully, but this bloke never got spiked somehow LOL.

Sorry to bore you guys with this story, but 20 years later, I still remember his quick reaction and the amazement of the rest of us.

Glad to hear he is OK

You can use a colander to catch fish like this (or quick little buggers)
