I've had 3 for going on 3 years. Two share a tank, get along lovely, both have larger bristles so I assume both males. Also because never any spawns.

3rd one had to be moved to another tank some time ago because "it" was constantly being chased. "It" also has a faceful of bristles but shorter ones.

Seems to me a male and a female would get along better than two males so really not sure just what I have.

I've been reading about them today and one site says females have smaller bristles. Another site says females have bristles only around the mouth and yet another site says males have a bridge on their nose.

I'm preplexed as to why two males would get along so lovely but a female would cause such a disturbance and be run out of the tank? For all I know they could all be males and one just have shorter bristles.

Wanta take a stabbing guess?

my understanding is that females have bristles around the sides of the head (if at all) and only males have them running up on top of the head. Not an expert by any means, but that's what I've read.

lots of photos at planet catfish: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=49

Looks like females either have no bristles or just a few short horizontal bristles on their snout. Anything more extensive than that and it's probably a male.

Interesting. I thought females had no bristles so to speak of...but may be a bit 'bumpy'.

I only had the one female for a few weeks (before she 'disappeared). But she had no bristles at all - that I saw at any rate.

inny or an outy!

:rainbow: :rainbow: :rainbow:

I guess then mine have to be all males.

Also see another thread with same question but didn't see it before posting because it was in the pleco forum. Didn't mean for duplicates here.
