I hope you don't lose any of your other fish due to your cousin plopping an unexpected fish into your tank. If I were you I would make him come get it until you are sure that your Neons and smaller fish won't become it's lunch. BTW, that looks like a Gourami to me, but then again I am no expert on the matter.

I agree to tell your cousin this is YOUR tank and not his dumping ground for the fish he doesn't want.

Put it in a pail and tell him to come get it.

Just checked again and don't know what cichlid that is but is that long white poo coming from that Tiger Barb? If so, that's a sign of internal parasites.

Please do not quote every sentence. Makes a mess to scroll thru all of that for our cell users.

Internal parasites (worms) is not uncommon in fish. Many of us worm our fish for this very reason. Long, stringy poo can also be from over feeding.

sorry for quoting every sentence, i will not do it again :)

i'm feeding my fish two or three times a day with flakes but if i do it three times a day just a few flakes will i feed it in.

Thats a jewel cichlid. An African softwater species. They can get pretty aggressive so I would keep a close eye on it.

seeing as aeonflame agrees with me i recon it is and yes like he said it CAN get aggressive but may not, just watch it and keep an eye on where your fish are if they are all at one end and the new fish is cruising the whole tank u prob have an issue

Yep, jewel cichlid. Not a good mix with community fish at all.

Large fish eat small fish for the most part. It's just the way they are. If something moves and fits in their mouth, they will give it a try. Why not take out some of your aquarium water and put it into a plastic bucket (the one you use for water changes) then net the cichlid and put it into the bucket. If you have a spare air stone and pump, use that to keep the oxygen in the bucket until your cousin comes back for his fish.

the cichlid size is just 3 1/2" and my neons are 1 1/2". i already did and put the cichlid a plastic bucket. thanks man.

I agree that its a jewel and if it don't eat it it'll nip it like crazy

yea they nip fins. 1 of my neon lost it's tail and the jewel ate it then i get the jewel out of the tank. :)

That appears to me to be a Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis bimaculatus). It is a African Cichlid found in West African rivers.

I have kept a pair of them in a community tank (1980's). They can be aggressive and will stand up to fish many times there size. not always successfully mind you.

I currently have a pair in my 100g with 5 Mbuna since December 2010 and they are pretty much ignored by the larger Africans.

That would be one of the species of Jewel cichlids, & I would HIGHLY recommend you get him out of there right now. He may kill everything in your tank for food or just for fun. I would also break the arm of the person who would drop such an aggressive species into my community tank!! What a J/O !!
