Here is a pic of one of my, what I believe to be, male silver dollars and the four females. Based on the fact that two of them will sometimes show this type of coloration while the other four show a much blander coloration and are larger, I believe I have two males and four females. They seem to show this coloration in the middle of the day, especially if I fed in the morning. Usually the only way to tell the two males apart is that their pectoral fins are red. This pic is from my phone.

I love the silver dollars, they look really funny. But I've never seen them in my LFS.

Nice pic for a phone - I just got a camera phone today - can't wait to try it.

It is reminiscent of a juvenile red belly pacu (remember both are Characins, same family as tetras). That one is the male. The other male isn't in the pic but looks the same.

What do the silver dollars live with? i want to add them to one of my tanks. I'm assuming they will live with tetras?

Mine are the 75 with the tiretrack eel, fire eel, gold nugget pleco, 2 bristlenose pleco, 2 Synodontis eupterus, and a baby ornate bichir.

I have tetras in my 40 community, and some cardinals in the 55 with the discus. Silver dollars are a nice fish. They are peaceful, yet large enough to go with semi-aggressive fish. I think my tank is ideal for them because no one bothers them or stresses them out, and no one is small enough to be bothered by them.
