Ok, as you can tell by the pic of my 55 gallon, I have no background.

I also have no plants, but that will be the case until the pond gets finished, and I move the Comet and Butterfly Koi outside.
Any suggestions on whata to do for a good looking background?

Lovely tank. It will be gorgeous when done. Hey, this is a hobby. We aren't supposed to do everything at once. We're supposed to spend money week after week after week after week.......LOL
About backgrounds....I was sitting around today thinking why has no one yet silconed the back inside of their tank and just dumped gravel on it that matches the bottom? You could stick branches to it if needed. It just seems to me that a tank would look bigger with the back and bottom all the same continuous color........ya know, like your walls and your carpeting? Or even sand.
I was also thinking of doing one of the 3-D backgrounds to my 75 when I get it but doing so reduces about 6 inches front to back. Why bother when you'll end up with another 55 gallon.

Poster board and clear tape...I am on a budget and wanted to not see the wall behind my tank. For .57 cents a sheet you can get poster board at Walmart, I cut it to size and taped it to the back. I went with black hoping it would bring out the color in everything, it did. Total cost was like 2 dollars (had to get tape too) so its cheap and looks alot better than a bare back. You cuold get poster board and tape things to it too, like a collage.

That's an idea for a short term fix...

I love wide tanks! Plants look good in wide tanks. For the background, is say dont waste your time making one, just go out and buy one and tape it. Saves you some time and maybe money. And it will look neat and better.

personally, i think black backgrounds are the best looking. they bring the life in the tank into the spotlight, so to speak.

WAYYYY wrong, if you look at the DIY backgrounds youll see that some take a few hours and look 10 times better than the cheap ones you buy.
But myself, i use a black background.

I know lol, people get lucky :P But, uncreative people like me tend to make a big mess and then feel like killing those poor innocent fish.
If you are creative and artistic. Go right ahead and make yourself a fancy background from styrophone.

I have 3 tanks with black backgrounds and one with a rock look. I prefer the black but just looking for one that is different.

It looks a little dark, since I don't have all the lighting up yet.

Looks nice - pretty much all of my tanks have black backgrounds - one has a dark purple that looks so dark it may as well be black.

Looks like one of mine with the same colored gravel with black on the back.
I can't stand all the rocks and plants on the backgrounds anymore altho I thought they were wonderful when I started this hobby. Now it just looks too busy and tends to hide the fish.

What kind of Pleco is that? It's the exact kind mine is.
