My Java Fern finally came in and I went out got found some 6500K Bulbs for my tank. Now with it being a incandescent hood, is it overkill to have 2 6500k bulbs or will the Fern hopefully grow like crazy?

that "6500k" tells us the spectrum of the bulb, ie the color. It's a good color for growing plants.

What it doesn't tell us, and what I think you're asking, is the power (or, the brightness) of the bulb. For that, we need to know the wattage of the bulb, which should be printed on it. Even knowing the power it's going to be a bit dicey because incandescents are much less efficient than fluoroescents, so the math is totally different.

It's a 15Watt bulb, sorry I didn't think to add that before I left.

30W total of fluorescent light in a 29g tank is quite low. I think java ferns and other hardy low-light plants will manage, but they probably won't grow particularly fast, and I don't think anything with stronger light requirements will do well.

Oh I did forget to mention this is in a 10g :/ Sorry I'm off today XD

The watt per gallon rule doesnt really apply to smaller tanks. Mathematically, it should be around 3 wpg, but you are actually getting less than that. I'd say you would be able to grow most medium light plants though

With Java Fern being low light plants, should I be alright? Just to recap it's 2 15Watt 6500k Daylights in a 10 gallon.

it's incandescent though (I mistakenly called it fluorescent in my previous post), so it's going to put out a lot less light than 30W of florescent would.

Yay or nay?

yae. It should be enough for java ferns, no matter how you look at it.

Alright cool, I should be good then. I have 2 bulbs running for a good couple of hours. If the algae starts to get out of control I'll cut the hours down. Thanks guys! :22:
