I have a few plants planted into a sand substrate. How close to the plants should I place the tabs? Does the fertalizer leech out into the sand very far? Does any of it disperse into the water in the tank or should I also use liquid fertalizer for the floating plants? Is there a certain distance away from a plant that the fertilizer will not reach the plants roots? They are newish plants so they do not have many roots yet.

Most commercial boxes of ferts give directions - I believe mine said within six inches; of course, I refuse to use those things now since I discovered those tabs just hang around - I found three still in my sand after a year! I just use a few liquid and solid pure chemicals as ferts to cover the critical items my plants need but I have very large fish that produce most the other things my plants need.

In direct answer to your question - the roots do not move to the tabs but the chemicals in the tabs diffuse through the sand to roots.:11:
