The most accurate way to determine gender with this monomorphic mbuna species is to 'vent' them, which entails physically handling the fish and visually inspecting their openings.
There are other subtle indicators which provide cues as to what the gender is (such as color vibrance, behavior pattern, fin tip shape, proportional size of the pelvic fins, etc).

Would that be the same way at the fish store? The ones they sell are pretty small and I'd want to make sure to get the opposite gender of the one in the tank already.

Mature Electric Blue Johanni females are fairly bright orange
here is a link where you can see them at various life stages

It is Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos Mangano where the male and female look alike tho the males are usually a bit deeper in colour

In many areas the common name "Electric Blue Johanni" is associated with M. cyaneorhabdos, and "Johanni's" equate to M. johanni.
However, sometimes the common name appears to be interchangeable for the two (yet different) species.
I've even been to a store that had M. johanni's (yellow orange juvies) in one tank, "Electric Blue Johanni's (M. cyaneorhabdos) in another tank, and "Maingano's" in a third tank (the specimens in the latter two tanks being the same species).
If that's a m. johannni, then it's definately a male (it would have been orange-yellowish as a juvenile). How small was it two years ago?

A little Marvin Gaye, a nice merlot... :14:
Yeah, I got nothin'. I don't know much about cichlids, but your title made me LOL. Yes, I have the maturity of a 10-year-old.
