Nice article. After reading about curing driftwood on this foroum I decided to boil mine. Hogged the very large turkey pan and stove for 6 hours adding water when it boiled off. I than soaked it in a bucket over night filled with old tank water. Placed it into the tank and enjoyed. Real driftwood makes a tank come alive, kind of like live plants. Add both and voila :ssmile:

When I buy wood, I just throw it in the tank. When I get wood from the wild, I scrub it with a wire brush and throw it in a trash can with lots of salt and hot water to kill any bugs that may be in it for a day or two. That's it.

I boil smaller pieces, more to get rid of as much tannins as i can
Larger pieces i pour boiling water over them to open the wood to again remove tannins, larger pieces then get dropped into a tank to sink and finish the tannin thing *L*

small peices also get boiled by me. if its too big for a pot i bake it to kill anything, then use stainless lag nuts and screw it to a piece of slate. tannins in the tank can look nice and make a good reminder of whens its time to do a WC

Not a fan of tannins in my display tanks, i do however like them in my BN tank.
The last bit of wood i did, cripey it was a shocker for tannins. I'd have to do daily 70% waterchanges to get it to a pale brown. I moved it to the BN tank and just left it be

I'd simmer mine if I could be they don't make pots large enough.
