I was at my local LFS and they had a pleco species there called a Farlowella for 5.99 but they were currently NFS aanyone know anything about them?

Very mellow fish, do best in large, well-established tanks with a fair bit of algae. Need good water circulation too.

I was thinking two for my 55 gallon? Is that ok size?

Bigger would be better, but try to find out which species you're looking to get. Check the online cat sites and find out what the recommended tank space and care are.

Interesting looking fish.
