When a homeade sponge filter is in the water should there be bubbles coming out? Mine consists of a large sponge with airline tubing stuck into it - the hole I made was wider - originally meant to hold an airstone but after watching a few youtube videos, I saw that I didn't need an airstone. Therefore, the hole in the sponge doesn't fit the airline tubing snugly and bubbles are coming out - is that normal or should I begin again with a new sponge?

You need a lift tube incorporated into your SF, Building one is about as complicated as Googling 'DIY Sponge filter'.
Some YT vids are better than others, Here ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) is a better example than what you're apparently following.
I used PVC pipe [Super cheap from the hardware store] w a hole or two drilled in it but the idea is exactly the same.

Thanks for providing the link to the video - that was actually the 1st one I ever watched :ssmile: and purchased all the materials for it but I never watched it to the very end to see it working in the tank and I also tried making it from my memory instead of watching it again to make sure I was doing it right - you're right - very uncomplicated!

Lol, I didn't even watch the ones where you can see they're using the really flat sponges [Useless IMO.] I had seen that one before and its a clear, concise, & useful demonstration.
