Neon Tetra's are getting BIG!

My small school of five Neons are growing quite large! When I got them, they were tiny little things, maybe a half inch long each. The biggest of the five is a little over 1 1/4 inches now!

I didn't know they got that big.


Some people I know claim that they can't keep Neons. Mine have been effortless.

Sounds like you have a happy tank.

Neons can be tricky, many of them seem to be very sick to begin with.

Most people that claim they can't keep Neons have very hard tap water. How is yours?

neons can grow to 1 1/2 to 2 inches in length. lol

I have hard water also, but no sulphur. I add a small amount of salt (1tbsp per five gallons)

I have the jumbo neons and perhaps you do as well. The max they grow is 2 inches tops.

You know, that's possible. Perhaps the one's that are getting real big were Jumbo's that got mixed in with the regulars.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong:

My understanding is that the "jumbo" description for Neons
is a sales thing. It normally points to more mature specimens
as opposed to very young fry-like specimens.

Jumbo or not, you will notice that they all have the same
species names Paracheirodon innesi.

I have seen them separated in tanks before so I have to assume they are different. Last time I went to buy some jumbo's the lady told me they were just the regulars so I'm holding out for more jumbo's.

Never heard of a "jumbo" but both my neon tetras and glowlight tetras do grow to be 1.5 - 2 inches. And fat as pigs too.
