Looking for something inexpensive where goldfish fry can hide in. It does not have to look good and would not like it to be any plant.

While waiting for replies and googeling, i found out spawning mops([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]).
This is perfect for me, will use this.

I've used a few PVC 1/2" fittings. Small enough for them to hide in, too small for larger fish to get to them. If you have anything like that already
I used that while getting my grow-out tank ready.

I'd probably toss some moss in the tank or hornwort. A spawning mop might be a bit dense for them to swim thru.

I know you said no plants but Hornwort is like a dollar for a huge bundle at most pet stores. It grows like a weed, it floats, and barely requires any light or nutrients.
When you're done, just dispose of it, or keep it hanging around for the next set of fry.

The problem here is that pet stores around here ask 6€ for a plant, minimum, and the aquarium i have will not have much light.

It doesn't need much light at all.
But I wouldn't pay 6 for a plant I wasn't going to use for a decoration.

+1 spawning mops are simple and easy to make. I prefer plants also, i like java moss, because they give the fry a place to hide, lots of microorganisms to munch on, and also improve water quality. However, spawning mops also get the job done. You may have to saturate it by hand to get all the air out, or weigh it down.

For larger fry I like pvc pipes cut into smaller pieces. Could make a few stacks of rock, with smaller caves and crevices for the fry to hide out in as well.

I have spawning mop/egg collecting mops made out of nylon yarn (the kind you would knit with) that I have boiled once to remove any foreign contaminant and to make them colour fast. If you make them green or brown, they look ok. Darker colours show eggs better. They are inexpensive, washable, reusable and gosh darn handy!

Sometimes, if you do not care about looks just put in a bag of loose marbles. The gaps between the marbles makes a great hideout.

Much depends on the type of fry. Tetra and live bearers will hide in dense folage. Cichlids will go into dark places, caves, pipes, etc. One does not fit all.
