I am still in the process of making a DIY sponge filter for a QT - my question is how do I know whether the size of the sponge will provide adequate filtration for a 10gal QT? I don't have a picture of what I'm planning to use - it's a utility sponge I got at Home Depot and I cut it not quite in half (using the larger half).

...Just saying.

Thanks...these are not things I think of doing. The sponge is almost 5 1/2 inches long, almost 4 inches high and 2 inches deep.

Sounds ok to me. The ones i use are about 4" square [on bigger tanks mostly] Just be sure give it a cleaning by squishing it out in old tanks water on a regular basis.
What are you going to use to weight it down?

I will probably get silicone adhesive from somewhere or crazy glue and attach it to an extra ceramic floor tile I have from my bathroom. When you say 4" square on "bigger tanks" - how big are we talking? And is the sponge the only filtration you use on those tanks?

Mine are the 'Black 20 PPI' listed on this page. ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.])
Until very recently I had one in [I]each back corner of my 90G [now just one], & One each in my 55G, 29G[Removed during remodel - not sure if it will fit now lol] & my 20G.
The sponge filters are not the only filtration in any tank I have regularly running, They are additional filtration and used as a cycled filter for when I need a portable BB colony to move to the QT tank.
When I am running the QT/ER tank it is primarily filtered using only the sponge.

I was originally going to run the sponge in my main tank for a few weeks for QT purposes until I discovered I couldn't keep it submerged (lol). Because I am impatient to get more fish due to a pause caused by ich, I got a hold of a new box filter someone was giving away on freecycle so I'm running that now and it will be ready by this weekend for the QT(has been running for 3 weeks) - plan on setting up the QT Sat night and getting more fish on Sunday. Once the box filter is out of my main tank, will put sponge in there.

Forgot to ask - if the floor tile is glazed, how would I find out whether the glaze is non toxic - or should I just silicone some rocks to it?
Forgot to ask - if the floor tile is glazed, how would I find out whether the glaze is non toxic - or should I just silicone some rocks to it? Prob have to check the manufacturers MSDS [Material Safety Data Sheet] I'm not really sure of another way but it is possible that there are some things in glazes that are not fish friendly. It may be paranoia lol but I am cautious of what I put in my tanks.
If you have a Home Depot nearby mine sells these ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) for 2 or 3$ apiece and I score them and cut/snap them in quarters [or as needed], Drill if needed for tie downs & they are perfect for holding down driftwood or sponge filters.
