It is with a heavy heart that I must report the passing of my oldest betta, Nicky the crowntail. When I got him it was clear he was already of advanced age for a betta; the thick body and ragged fins told me that. Best guess was that he was over two years of age already, though now I think he may have been even older than that.
This eventing I came upstairs to fins Nicky floating in his tank, head pulled back to show his gill linings, motionless. There were no signs of discoloration or trauma to the gills, and nothing to suggest it was anything other than his seasons having run out.
Nicky will be greatly missed.
