So I asked Petsmart to show me a Nerite snail, so I could see if it looked good, and wanted to buy one. He brought me to a marine tank with some snails and a few clown fish.

So I ask him if my other fish will bother it, and list off a few. He quickly responded with

"well... this is a salt water animal, so I hope you're not putting it with a Betta"

I reply with
"But Nerites live just fine in fresh water..."

He goes:
"I'm sorry, I don't think I should sell you this animal, it won't live long"

I reply
"I think it'll be okay, I'm positive it can live in freshwater"

And he just keeps saying "sorry, I can't sell you this animal knowing it will die"

Nerite snails can live in freshwater, right? I mean, I'm positive I read it on Petsmart's own website that they live in freshwater. They just need salt to mate, don't they?

So now the only store in the area with Nerite snails, and they won't sell it to me. I was thinking of going a different day and just buying it, no questions asked, but I don't want to give them my money if they don't really know much about what they're selling.

You are correct that nerite snails only need salt to breed. I was trying to find some myself but no one local has any. A lot of LFS only know part of what they need to know about the fish they sell which is why you have to be careful about listening to any advice they give.

Are you sure it was Petsmart, though? I thought only Petco sold saltwater. Where I'm at even they don't:scry:

If you really want one, I think I'd just go back on a different day and hope someone else is working, or with something credible to prove your case (like a book or webpage).

Petsmart and Petco blur in my head. Could have been either one. If Petsmart doesn't sell marine animals, then it was probably Petco. Pet store chains need to stop using blue and red color schemes. Makes it difficult to remember the logo.

I'm going to check around at a couple of smaller marine-only stores and see what I can find. I've never really went in them, since I only keep freshwater, so it'll be an adventure into a part of the hobby I have no idea about.

Can't speak for all Petsmarts but my local one doesn't sell SW fish/verts.

Here's ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) something you can print to show them [if required].
