Hi everyone! I'm new to this site and have a few questions and was wondering if someone could help me out. My child wants a pet shark for Christmas and I need some info on what would be the best type to buy. We only have a 40 gallon tank so we are not looking for anything too big. It doesn't really have to be a true shark as long as it looks like one and doesn't grow to big. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Donica.

What were you looking for. Saltwater, or freshwater?

welome to ac.
the red tail shark, is very nice. but you should have at least 2 of them.
they do not get that big. they love to play, and this is why i say to get 2 or more. they never seem to do any harm, to each other.
now some books and some peoples will tell you that they are mean.
but i have found this to be not true.
and i been in fish for over 30 years. lol

In my experiance with RTS, they can be quite the agressors.
They arent really sharks, but rather a member of the minnow family. I think they are just called sharks so they sell better.

no, they are not real sharks. lol
when i get them in, i put them in with neon tetras.
and they have yet to harm them.
maybe there something in my water that calm them down. lol

rollie, are you drugging your fish again???? lol
For a true shark, you would need a saltwater tank of around 1000 gallons. Unfortuanatly, as you probobly know, that will not be cheap.

I've kept them in bunches also - like rollie's they chase the bejesus out of each other but never cause any injury.
It is important to keep in mind that I have several tanks and can move fish around easily if I have a problem. I would NEVER reccomend that anyone try it without a similar fallback plan.
