So keeping a vigil eye on the rest of my tank to see if any other fish start behaving weirdly... I spotted a baby assassin snail! He's too small to be one we purchased, but he's got his cute little shell!
I am SO happy right now. I'll see if I can get a picture... he was kind of just peeking out from under a rock earlier.

He came out from hiding so.. here he is!

For size comparison, look at the gravel compared to his shell and the kuhli loach! (He's the little striped spiral to the right of the red rock)

Assassin snail babies can be hard to spot, they tend to bury themselves in the substrate shortly after they are born, and come out into the open when they get larger. Chances are there is more than one baby assassin in your tank.

One can only hope! The adults have been going at it like rabbits since Day 1 ¬.¬

*falls over laughing* As long as they don't breed quite as enthusiastically as rabbits; then you'd be up to your eyebrows in another kind of snail

Would be nice if they bred like rabbits, assassin snails can usually sell for a few bucks each! Always a market for them locally and on the various forums.

Tell me about it. As I look at my tank full of snails, here are the assassins in the corner making hoopie 24/7. But how can you have snails with that kuhli in the tank?

Up until last night I'd say my Kuhlis just weren't that into snail. (Must be non-French Cooking types) Last night I saw ONE kuhli munching on a dead snail body, but I suspect the assassin snail started the job and just got too full. (it was a larger snail, and there was a nearby assassin.)
I'd have been overjoyed if my kuhlis had feasted on them... but the snail infestation just grew and grew so.. I got some assassins and now I'm picking out shells which I am enjoying IMMENSELY!
I was surprised how often they were mating.... I think I told my bf they took one look at the tank and said "well we are going to need more for THIS job" :hmm3grin2orange:

I saw two more itty bitty baby assassins this evening. These were even smaller than the first one. Its a wonder I hadn't sucked them out with my water change today they are so little!
