I have a 55 gallon tank that is "semi-planted". I want to be able see my fish in the morning before I go to work at 8am and also at night until 10 or 11 pm. Is there a problem having the lights on for 14-15 hours? Would it be better to have them shut off for 3 hours in the afternoon?

I have my lights on a 4on-4off-4on schedule. If you run the lights for too long, you risk a large algae outbreak as well as increased heat/evaporation. Also, the plants and fish need enough "downtime" to keep healthy.

Plants only need 8 hours. 14-15 is waaaay to long. Have it come on in the evening when your viewing it the most. This is on from 2pm-10pm.

If you have mostly simple plants such as in plant mans tank then 8 hrs is more then enough .You say you are lightly planted so I should say that PMs advice is good.
Leaving them on for 14-15 hrs is just asking for algae issues such as green water.I have the same dillema with my very lightly planted tank atm.I want to see the fish in the mornings as I put my boots on and think about the coming day but that is 430 am and I dont get home till 5 pm which has my lights on way too long.Since the plants are all anubia and ferns they certainly do not need all this light so I may go with a split lighting schedule when I see algae starting up .

I would go with 8-10 hours when you are home in the evening. You maximize your viewing time that way.

Plantman, Smaug has many a photo posted here and keeps a nice tank. No need to be rude and post things like that.

Some also do not find it necessary to post the same pic of the same plants and same tank 150 times, either. Smaug's have been entered and won the tank competitions several times.

To the OP, is there any reason you can not check your fish before leaving for work and turning the lights back off when you leave? I get up around 5, check all my fish and simply turn the lights back off until 10.
