View Full Version : What's wrong with my gourami?

I've lost a gourami previously due to similar symptoms. I've noticed several cuts on the previous one, so I quarantine her and doused with melafix. She didn't survive. She also kept coming up to the top for oxygen every minute for so.

This other gourami isn't showing any unusual symptoms other than the wound.
Anyone have any idea how to treat this/what this is? Thanks.

Not sure about the wound, though i would treat with a antibiotic like Aquari-cycline tabs.

Gouramis are labyrinth fish and need to come to the surface to grab air, that behaviour i would not be worried about at all

While Gouramis are Labyrinth fish, coming up every single minute for air means He is having problems with regular gill function.

What are your water parameters?
What are the other tankmates?

I'm quite familiar with the behaviors of labyrinth fish. But the wound is what I'm concerned about since the other symptoms are not present in this gourami like it was in the other deceased gourami with similar wounds.

pH: 6.6
NH3: 0
NO2-: 0
NO3-: 10

tankmates are cardinal tetras, albino corys, regular otos & giant otos, & amano shrimp.

He's not showing any unusual behavor as of now, so I'm only concerned about the wound. Should I treat with melafix? Or what do you recommend?

I recommended an antibiotic. I use Aquari-cycline tabs

I'll give it a try, its the same stuff I use for cyanobacteria. Thanks

I'm not very farmilar with Aquari-cycline, but if it were me, I would just double check the label to see if this antibiotic will effect your BB in your filter.

Some anitbiotics used to treat fish can also kill off some of your bacteria and effect your cycle.

You might have already checked into that as you have used it before, but I thought I would mention it anyway just in case.

Day 6 of treatment, it doesn't look like he's getting better.

What else is in the tank?
Ornaments, fish, etc.
That looks much more serious in this larger photo. You need to find the source of this.

Read the entire thread, please.
Nearly everything above my latest post refers to both suggestions for antibiotic treatment, and how the treatment is currently going.

It did get worse since the treatment started 6 days ago. Other inhabitants are in a previous post, but to repeat, I have some cardinal tetras, albino sterbai, some giant otos & regular otos, and some shrimp.

It's heavily planted with one piece of driftwood with moss on it... and two heaters--one with a plastic guard and one without. Could it have been burned?
