View Full Version : Creating tetra shoals

We are going to replace our 30 gal tank with either a 40 long or a 40 breeder, and replace our Edge with a 20 gal, probably a 20 long due to height restraints in the location we want to use. Probably put in the 40 in about 4-5 weeks...or both, but have to cycle the 20.

For weight distribution would the 40 gals be better in the long than the breeder (36 x 18 x 17 high)? Would fish prefer the longer distance for swimming?

In the 30 we have three each of diamond, bloodfin, and redeye tetra, 10 neons, one honey gourami, 3 otos, and some snails. One baby tetra, free-swimming and still small.

We would be putting 1-2 groups of the tetra in the new 20 gal tank, and leaving 1-2 groups in the 40.

Thinking about whether it would be better to do 6-8 of each the diamond, redeye and bloodfin or keep a couple of the groups lower to make the others much larger....or how to divide between the two tanks...

Also, we want a couple of medium-sized fish in the 40 because my sister has visual problems and can't see the tetra so well. Not sure what fish would be good there. Brighter colors would probably be best, though I love pearl gourami. And someone suggested roseline sharks but would a 40 be too small for them? Also, I'm thinking of getting three of whatever medium-sized fish we choose.

What about trying to get a really large group of neons/cardinals in one of the tanks (both will be planted)?

Sorry for all the questions!
