I am going to order my filstar xP2 canister filter right now but before I do I just wanted to know if I should buy ceramic rings with it? I don't think it comes with them and I know a lot of people like them. I think it just comes with pads and some of those bio-zorb chemical pouches.
I was also wondering if any old ceramic rings from different companies would work because the Filstar ones seem real expensive. $15 for a box. Other complanies have a box for like $6
...can't imagine why a brand would matter too much...I used the AquaClear bio-balls in my Emperor...I'd get it now...

The rings are great - I remember looking at them the first time I used them and wondering just what the heck good they would do - well now I know!
That tanks water doesn't change no matter what. I've had to skip cleanings because of vacations etc. When I come back the water is just as clean, clear and safe as when I left!
I use the ceramic rings as the first tier and use Ehfisynth as the second and third tiers in my canisters with great results. Agreed that any ceramic rings should be just fine. I haven't used the bio-balls but hear great things about them.
If you can get any, I reccomend a little of the Eheim Ehfisynth that gm72 mentioned. It is likely to be, at least technically, the best bio media on the market.
I hear you get the best result by combining it with some biomechanical media the way gm72 does. On the other hand those $6 rings will likely do just fine :)

I am just getting back to this thread but I figured as much as you guys said last night. The replies were taking a while last night and I had to order quick because I had to go and I had my shopping cart all ready. But I just ordered my xP2 and I am just gunna pick up the cheapest ceramic rings at the store and the bio-balls. The xP2 has 2 media trays so I plan to fill them with each of those media.
Thanks all!
