hello, ive been breeding fish for 6 or 7 years now and im currntly tryen to breed my neon tetras does any one have any hints or tips?
iv been tryen for a few weeks and the females get big and the males court them and then when i wake up the females all seem smaller but i can never find any eggs no fry. there curntly in a 10g long heavly planted. so i dont see whats wrong here i am prepairing to set my 55g back up and i think ima get more neons to see if that solves the problem (currently have 10)
also the other day i picked up 5 black skirt tetras do they have diffrent needs to breed then the neons because im going to put them all in my 55g and try breeding my fish in that then removen the fry to grow out tanks.
thanks for helping me out

I would luv to as well but neons are imported because they are a difficult fish to breed. Eggs need to be kept in very subdued light is all I know about it.

Black skirts are easy to breed. Just a pair in a breeding tank with some moss or some type of plant, watched closely to make sure they spawn, then parents removed immediately before eggs are eaten.

well i am doing something right tho if i can get them to get to the point of layen the eggs so im close ill keep tweeking at it and once i get successe ill let you no what i did so hopefuly you can breed them your self. every one will prolly laugh but i went over bored tryen to get them to breed i took a 2l bottle cut it in half and drilled small holes in it and ran a underwater filter with a hos to it to make it rain in my tank it worked nicely and there activied incressed alot i also used led candles to simulate lightning as well and then i draind the tank to half (before doing this) then i filled up a bucket and re filled it useing a small areator hos so it would fill up slowly to trick them to thinking it was the raining season hehe think ima try more cover and maybe adding some marbles on the ground so the eggs will fall threw and be more hidden i have a feeling there eating the eggs or my guppy is but yea like i said if i get them to breed ill let you no what all i did
thanks

I have at least one neon that will seem to get gravid, so I did some searching and from what I've read the eggs themselves are apparently very highly photo sensitive.

A couple of the people that have had success were actually covering their tank with blankets to keep all light out when they expected the female to lay.

Alas that was several months ago so I don't have links to offer, but I found them just googling breeding Neon tetras.

ah, I see... "watts per gallon" only really applies to fluorescent light, not incandescents like what you've got. Doesn't really matter, I was just confused. If your plants are doing well then your lighting is good.

oh and the tank there in is co2 free and i jus re did my tank about a week ago and the glosso needs trimded again i may be wrong the light may not be doing any thing i had glosso in my 2g the only diff was the lighten so you can see why i belive it to be the lighten but the tank is heated about 76 ish filtererd it gets sunlight every day and the light for 10hr i use liquid ferts once a week and i have 16 fish in there (alil over crowed i no its jus a temp tank till my 55g is ready) suprisingly my ammona is low and ph is around 7ish i am still new to aquascapen so it may be something else causen them to thrive what do u think? am i right is it the lighten or is it something else?

good plant growth is achieved through a balance of light, nutrients, and carbon dioxide. Too much or too little of any of those in proportion to the others can cause poor plant growth and/or an algae explosion. If your plants look good and you don't have too much algae than in sounds like you are in balance.
