I have had the same pleco from the first aquarium I started in 2000. It has lived through aquarium crashes, chlorine spikes, multiple moves, ammonia spikes and I am sure more.
The second longest fish was a gourami I bought at the same time but it died two months ago.

So, how long is the pleco able to live in captivity?

20+ years is a good bet. Mine is at least 12 years now.

got to love petco's "requirement and care" cards... i honestly dont know first hand as my one pleco is only about 2 years old. like yours hes lived through everything and is quite bullet proof.

Another funny petco "care" fact I've noticed while at work. They say the tarantulas can live about 10 years with proper care. Males typically live for about 2 and females for about 20, so I think they just averaged it .... I'm sure there's a few others that are escaping me at the moment, but I never trust those things. Supposedly a vet was consulted for all of them .
