I have a empty 5g Bio Wheel tank. I was wondering what I could put in it besides you know Betta, Ghost Shrimp and Dwarf Frogs.
PS. No Heater included Since the tank does not support one.
I have a small heater in my 5.5 gallon, why can't you put a little 25 watter in there? Without a heater you are exceedingly limited in your choices. Maybe some white clouds?
...don't think so...they're very active fish...need lots of room...
True, good point. They are pretty zippy. I guess they were the first small coldwater-adaptable fish that came to mind.
Rue is right, don't listen to me. Other than the fact that I guarantee you can fit a 25 watt heater into a 5 gallon tank!

if you can get a heater (even a 50W set to low) you can get a few guppies, or make it a microreef

I would say goldfish or get yourself a heater. I saw some sweet stuff at walmart the other day. They had submersible 2-5 gallon heaters for like $6.00.
I think that's pretty cool. I would suggest finding the smallest heater you can find and use that. Then maybe you can put some real small fish like micro-rasboras or a few mollies or some type of non-schooling fish in there. 2-3 mollies with frequent water changes would work out good and actually look kind of cool I think.

If he weren't to get a heater then why not?

Goldfish need 20 galllons for one, and 10 for each aditional fish, plus massive filtration, and an agressive waterchange schedule.

that too. One goldfish with a good filter and weekly water changes CAN be in a 10g, but 20g each and 10g thereafter is best. goldfish are terrible abused by being in tanks smaller than 10g

I didn't know they were that sensitive. I know they need more than a bowl but I thought in a small setup like that a couple would do fine.

theyre messy. thats the problem. they have little digestive tract so what they eat literally comes out within a few minutes. they eat and eat and eat. if they had better digestive tracts, a 5g might be suitable.

Thats false. The Lentght of the digestive tract is not proportional to the amount of waste produced. However, the longer the waste is in the digestive tract, the more nutrients are absorbed.

PLUS goldfish can grow to be something like a foot long. Most people only buy them for outdoor ponds.

O, I thought those were the big Koi.
No, the Koi can get up to 2'...the comets and the other single-finned colour varieties can easily go 1'+
The fancies rarely grow past 6-10", but are much rounder bodied for their size, so they also need the room...

feeder comets get huge. when i started fish keeping, i rescued a feeder back in about 2002 from wal-mart. he even went through my 5.5 extremely overstocked and uncycled tank. he then went on to live in my 33g with tropical fish (he was used to 75F and liked it) he got to a whopping 8" from a 1" baby, and never got sick at all in the time i had him. then, when i had to get rid of all my tanks back then, i sold the goldfish for 25$ and my LFS sold him for 40$ to someones

It is not a hood were I can cut a space for the heater. It is a hood with a built in Bio Wheel. the meterial is not made to be cut and can not be cut.

If it's plastic it can be cut.....get an exacto knife or something.
And if it's some kind of metal find your self a lower temperature torch.

Zackish probably didn't know about this kind of goldfish, but he's not wrong. In Aquarium Fish Magazine they talked about the China Doll Goldfish. Max. size 2 in., min. tank size 2.5 gallons. Most livebearers except four-eyed fish, mollys, and maybe swordtails can be kept in a 5 gallon. 1 or 2 dwarf gouramis or some small tetras could go in a 5 gallon.
...how much is the China Doll?...
Without a heater...you really should make sure the room temp. is enough to keep the water temp. on the higher side...
I have no idea, because I've never seen them for sale.

If you want DP's then heres what you do (I've had mroe experience with this fish than most of my other fish).
Theres 2 options, one if your tank is tall, one if its regular rectangle-long.
TALL: One DP is the max, unless you can somehow work out one "area" being at the top corner and one in the oposite corner in the bottom. Lots of plants, add a TINY (1" across) pot into the middle of the tank.
REG-LONG: 2 DP's, IF, and ONLY IF you can fit a LOT of plants into the tank, 2 clay pots in either corner. The plants help to break up their line of sight, thereby reducing aggression (if its not, then they see each other and go "HEY...... I can take him...."), and the pots help to give a clearly-defined territory.
General Care:
Feed frozen or live Bloodworms twice daily.
Do a 50% water change every week (yes, 50%, their dirty).
If you can arrange it, then create a small "tank" (it can just be a tupperware container) with the "pest" snails you see come with live plants. You can find these at Petsmart, they will generally just GIVE them to you. Leave them in said container long enough for them to lay eggs, and feed 1 or so daily as a treat, OR if you have lots 3-5+ daily as the main food.
A healthy DP should have a nice little bulge about the curvature of this: ( Any more than that is unhealthy.
NEVER buy a DP that has a concave belly. These guys are extremelly susceptible to Intestinal Parasites, and they WILL spread them.

From my personal experiences with this fish, I would recommend them if your looking for an intelligent, aggressive fish. Do NOT buy them if your lookinf for something "flashy" like an active aquarium (tetras, livebearers, ect). They are NOT a flashy fish, their tiny in their aquariums. But they can be a very rewarding fish, especially when you get them to eat out of your fingers.

Why a floating heater?

The tank does not support a Screw on heater. The filter is a built in Bio Wheel and takes up the Whole back space.

Why cant you get a 25 watt small pad-style heater? It would be much more reliable than a floating one, not to mention it would provide better heat distribution.

In that case, try to get a male and a female, because 2 males are too much aggression. It's quite hard to sex them in the store, because their generally quite young still, but do your best, and hope you got a m/f combo :D
Heres how to sex them, complete with pics: [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
