i want the 20g long to have more hard to care for and expensive corals. ive given alot of thought equipment wise, and lightings been a hard choice. since im making my own 7" tall hood, i have plenty of room for some lights. i was looking at a 4X39w fixture and a 30W blue actinic. would that lighting make the grade or more wattage?

im no expert but I would guess that you could get away with it. Clams, SPS, LPS though usually dont do well without halides though :(. Thats certainly not an absolute though. Also, I think you would be skimping on the actinic. are you planning to run the fixtures 2 wide by 2 deep? I would suggest doing half actinic and half 10,000k.

Really, you need to find someone more knowledgable than me. I have never kept a reef actually :0 but would like to start and have some friends in the hobby.

Like Zer said it depends what type of coral you have and how many.
Try Marinedepot.com that place has good people on their forums.
I find "argi" one of the administrators to be most helpful.
