Just wandering when you should isolate a Platy in order to ensure survival of the fry?

My Platy is enormous at the moment, and want to put her in the breed-trap but dont want to do it too early.

Also, once the fry are born, should i remove her straight away?

ALSO, i only have 2 females, no males! Whats the chance she was preggo before i bought her, ive had her about 6 weeks. I dont see the chance of her mating with the Neons, Knifefish or Redtail (although exciting the prospect is). im 99% sure she is pregnant as she is acting normal, a little slower than usual but.

There is EVERY chance that she was preggers when you got her. And if it's been 6 weeks then she is about to pop! hehehe

If you can post a photo I sure someone here could tell your how far off the babies are from her shape. When she does birth it is best to remove the mom before her appetite returns.

Setting up a 1 gallon tank for livebearers about to pop is preferable to the breeding trap method.

While 1 gallon still isn't much, it does cause less stress than those tiny breeding traps, and there's enough room in there for you to set up floating plants (plastic or real) for her to hide under, as opposed to the breeding trap where with most she can still see the threat to her on all sides.
