when i go to europe, the 2 things i want are a canister filter and a light. the canister and the light will both be for the 20g long which i want heavily planted. for the light, i guess a T-5 with reflector is best. can anyone name any chain stores in europe that would carry good filters and lights?

In regards to Germany, there are not very many (if any) pet stores that are chains or franchises. Most are small, independent stores. You will find that there are many stores that actually only carry fish and aquarium supplies.

However, if you are going to be in the Duisburg area, I reccomend going to the worlds largest pet store....

those eheims for 200 euros are sweet. i think i'll get one.

i might be able to get to that store. im going to try to make my 20g long fancy-@$$ like this one. im gonna build the hood myself. i want a 10" bottom of wood and a big top like that one, and the T-5 to be hidden in the hood

and i want this light from the website. 4X39W

Don't forget about being able to take anything with you on the plane again. Depending on what airline you are flying with, double check the allowable pieces and weight you can check in, or let me know what airline you are flying back on and I'll let you know. You are also allowed to only bring in a maximum of $700 worth of goods before you have to pay any customs/duty on it. You also have the option of sending the stuff as extra freight, but then you will most likely have to pay customs/duty on it.

Gosh yes. You may get socked big with duty fees and not only that, you may find parts hard to find here.

It looks as though you have been checking on prices, etc.
I would advise that you carefully weigh the costs, exchange rates, possible customs fee, filters are bulky and may incur additional charges by the airline.

Buying things in the country of origin isn't always cheaper.

Last year I had a friend that went to Europe, I asked him to buy some fishing reels while he was in Sweden Manufactured there), he said that the price was about 10% higher than it is here in the US.

You may find some great bargains, just be careful.

Have fun!!

Cocoa, Nanaglen lives in Germany, you might want to PM her to get her advice.

I'd stick to buying things where you can readily return them.

lol, im going to pack light. sticking a fluval 205, python, clothes, TONS of aquarium decorations, and other stuff in a suitcase from seattle wasnt fun. it was like tetris.

as for where im going, i have nowhere directly planned. its just london, holland, and other countries around first then germany. im renting a motorhome and just driving allover. i have family in germany so they can probably show me some stores. what would be hilarious is if they actually had a aquarium

Holland is beautiful as is Germany. One of my favorite trips was when I went to Belgium and Holland. Brussels and Amsterdam are great places. Sounds like you have an awesome trip planned.
