I am planning a little ADF tank and was wondering if this filter [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] would be ok? the only problem with it is it does vibrate the tank ...
the tank is this [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
I have a heater that will keep the tank 76-78 degrees and i have hiding spots and am going to get hiding places and two babies dwarfs
I've heard vibrations stress them out so i dont wanna risk it. I am not getting any yet but the tank was on sale so I went ahead and picked it up ... I know its a little small :(
I have a cycled tank I will run the filter in and take some gravel from for the tank so its cycled since I know this can be a major issue since they can be so sensitive

I'm just gonna remove the filter and do twice weekly water changes ...

That tank is way too small to use for anything except maybe a few shrimp. Please research the requirements of your pets beforehand. it will save you a lot of grief in the future.
Also, putting anything in a tank without using a filter is nothing short of torture. How would you like to spend your life in a bathroom with a toilet that did not flush?

no this is not ok. frogs of any type are extremely sensitive to water quality, or in your case lack there of. they need very clean water and that filter wont do it for them. my daughter had one for her betta tank, its crap, and we replaced it.
after doing some real research, i found that most sites say the minimum size tank for one ADF is 5g, and personally i would want bigger, especially if i was going to put 2 in the tank. and don't skimp on filtration! get a quality filter rated for at least double the tank size, you've been told this in every thread you have started!
honestly, how many threads are you going to start asking if something totally inappropriate is ok, and then swear you did research when we tell you no. i am beginning to think you sit around your dorm room with your college buddies and think of totally inappropriate set ups to ask about just to see what kind of response you will get from us.

I throughtly researched them. Most sites say the min is one gallon. I can change it into a ghost shrimp tank or just return the tank no big deal. My original plan for the frogs was a ten gallon anyway. I love the little guys :) the filter on my ten is rated for 10 gallons. Btw african clawed frogs are the ones that require big tanks. Adf's can't be in tall tanks which most bigger tanks are and are weak swimmers so powerful filtration isn't good ...

I see now, you must have a different internet than everyone else. I could not find a single credible site that say the min is 1 gallon. Yahoo answers is a poor place to seek information on proper fish care. I did see where a couple sites recommend no more than keeping one frog per gallon of water, but this does not mean the same thing as saying a 1 gallon tank is suitable to keep 1. Also, the effectiveness of filter ratings are greatly exaggerated. you should always have a filter at least twice as large as the volume it is rated for by the manufacturer, and often more is better.
Keeping fish in a 1 g tank is like keeping a human in a 6' square cage or an elevator, etc..
Yes...they can survive. They may even live out a normal life-span...but who would want to?

Ok I'm done with tanks smaller than ten gallons ... I know the requirements for both so do you think three ADF's in a ten gallon or 2 firebelly toads? I've looked into all the care I just didn't know the space for the ADF's. I'm leaning towards firebellies :) and the tank is going back asap. I know the firebellies and ADF's have totally different requirements but revamped the tank can go either way.

you do realize that the toads and terrestrial creatures that like water, not aquatic creatures, right? You're talking about a terrarium with some water in it at that point, not an aquarium.

Yes I understand either way I can do it :) just which would be more suitable? I've already picked out a 10 gallon in tank filter for the firebellies even though it'll only be 2-4 inches of water. They say you can use aquarium gravel covered with peat moss. Just which would be more suitable? I love the activity level of the firebellies and the bright colors. I've looked up diet cage requirements everything. The firebellies are perfect for my first terrarium :) I love frogs :)

Elly, it appears that you are more interested in doing what pleases you and not sufficiently considering what is best for your pets. Animals are gifts, and pets are special gifts. We need to treat them accordingly.
It's never good to just rush into something because you want it now. You can bite off more than you can chew. I've noticed your interests seem to flit from one type of animal (fish) to another (amphibians), without investing the necessary amount to time to learn to properly care for either.
These are living creatures, not just cute ornaments. They have value beyond just their pretty colors or intriguing personalities. They are living beings, and can suffer and die like all living beings.
Please reconsider this. I don't think you're ready for it.

Right and wrong.FBT can live in mostly water situations with just a few above water resting areas.I kept them for awhile in a 90% water situation. They had a floating pc of bark to rest on if they wanted but mostly they stayed in the water.I do realize this poster seems a bit flighty on there pet choices but we seem to be a bit critical of her choices more often then not.The 10 gal she has can and will work for up to 6 fbt or 2-3 adf.If fbt are chosen then a filter can be skipped and 100% water changes performed twice a week as you would only need 5 gals of water for them and a heater. The adf would need a heater and a filter being 100% aquatic and total water changes several times a week would stress them.Small fish could be kept with the adf as well. The pdf would require more upkeep as far as needing to supply each one with about 6-10 small crickets a week which is messy, thus the 100% water changes. The adf would just need frozen bloodworms and or some pellet frog food meant for them.Btw,for the fbt,do not use any gravel or moss that would be eaten in there exhuberance during cricket chasing. It will get clogged in there digestive tract.Use rehydrated coco husk that comes in a dried brick. Its small grain size makes it pass through there systems safely. If you go the route of mostly water and floating docks for them, you dont need to worry about that at all.

I was just pointing out that they have different environmental requirements, so switching between planning for one then the other involves more than just changing the animal itself.

My pets are properly cared for with high quality diets and plenty of space. I've looked inton the planning of both ten gallons and all neccesary supplies ... My hamsters are my babies :) Safi and Sofi and have large seperate cages and a well balanced diet. Spots and Echo are on omega one in a forty gallon and my female betta is in a ten gallon with oto's and they are eating omega one betta buffet and the oto's get hikari algae wafer. My pets are my life sometimes I just misread information.
As for the mostly water route I hadn't heard of that... Hmm... I'll look into it. I think the terrestrial layout seems better for them... And I was going to get two fbt or 2 -3 ADF's
I just made the mistake of trusting an unreliable size requirement... All the other info was consistant from site to site.
I'm just worrying about the special feeding needs of ADF's since they have trouble seeing.

My pets are properly cared for with high quality diets and plenty of space.
Except for your goldfish, which you kept in a 10 gallon tank until someone was kind enough to let you unload them on them.
And your betta which you kept in a bowl because you were going to put it in a 10 gallon but you bought it before you had room in a 10 gallon.
And your gouramis which you got a second one of even after everyone told you that a single one in a 40 gallon was overstocked.
...so which of your pets have plenty of space again?

The hammies have tons of room... More than 360 sq inches. My 2 inch betta has a ten gallon. And my kissing gourami is 6 inches and the filters handle him and the baby well. He's super happy. The goldfish were a mistake but I'm learning. It just takes me a few tries cuz I'm stupid as can be. I try to spoil them though and Safi, Sofi and Spots love me :)

Oh, I didn't realize your fish loved you. That makes everything different.
Do you suppose your last betta that you kept in a bowl until it died of ich loved you as well? Or do you think it blamed you for keeping it in unacceptable conditions which directly led to it succumbing to disease and death?

Safi and Sofi are hamsters ... Spots is great and Naomi ( the betta your talking about) was in a sorotity in the ten gallon but bullied the others so I pulled her out for the safety of the others and herself. I took down the sorority to provide a better temp home for Spots.

my interests are pretty much all animals and I really like mammals but cant have them other than the hamsters ... I've never had frogs other than the ADF's so I wanted to look into beginner amphibians. I'm not setting up either tank yet I was just getting supplies together for when I can. And I cant have anything but fish in my dorm so I am gathering supplies so I can properly care for them. Sorry I've trusted a few wrong websites. Either one will get a proper home and I've looked into supplies for both :) I'm glad I'm making myself wait though just in case I lose interest.
Smaug: could I use the coconut husk on 2/3 of the tank and divide the other 1/3 off for water and run a filter since that'll keep the water cleaner for them since I know they can be sensitive
Maybe put coconut husk over gravel? I'm just trying to think of ways to make this work so i have a tank design in mind.

after reading many of your threads i have a few things to comment about this.
why do you keep buying or planning for more animals when you cant properly take care of the ones you have?
why will you spend money on stuff for a new setup but not a proper stand for your tank which may break any day?
why do you ask advice here and only listen to the bits and pieces that suit your situation?
why dont you take responsibility for housing pets improperly and say that they seems happy?
and, seriously, why dont you take the advice given in all the threads you start here?
back to the cocohusk on gravel. i would not reccomend gravel or ever use gravel in any of my amphibian tanks as the risk of impaction with gravel is very high. and if you dont know what impaction is basically an item clogs the colon/intestines in an animal and ruptures it

I am building a tank stand for the 40 and all my pets are taken care of. the only pet things I'm picking up are extra stuff for my hamsters and a gravel vac. other than that they have everything. I just wanted to look into it.
people on here seem to be very negative so I just block the angry comments out. My pets are housed properly other than Spots and he has everything he needs. And I do take the advice ... thats why I'm building the tank stand and upgraded Spots and why Hinoko has her own tank and why everyone has better diets and filtration.
Ok no gravel at all ... but will coconut husk sloping down into the water cause a problem at all? clogged filter that stuff or just put up a small plexiglas divider with bigger rocks ramped up to it? I want to use a filter. And I'm still debating getting them.

Yes I ask a lot of questions and consider many different pets but i get on here to discuss that ... Why do you guys think I dont take care of my pets? My two goldfish who were my first fish and I followed everyones advice and returned them? My betta who was put in a bowl because the other members of the sorority were not working with her ... or my 12 year old kissing gourami in the forty gallon who loves his tank mate and is super healthy?
The pets I have now are two hamsters in 360+ sq in cages each and are being fed a high quality food and each have a wheel and plenty of toys and aspen bedding if anyone wants to know . Spots and Echo who have the forty gallon which has proper filtration and stays 76 degrees and they eat Omega one small pellets and Hinoko who has the ten gallon and is also eating Omega one ... so who out of this bunch isnt taken care of?

My betta who was put in a bowl because the other members of the sorority were not working with her
your betta STARTED in a bowl. I don't know if you've forgotten that or hoped we have.
We told you your goldfish didn't belong in a 10 gallon so you looked for a way to rehome them. You told us you were going to put a betta in the 10 gallon and we agreed that that was a good idea but told you not to get the betta until the 10 gallon was free and cycled. That's the part you decided to ignore: you got the betta before you got rid of the goldfish, so you kept the betta in the bowl.
my 12 year old kissing gourami in the forty gallon who loves his tank mate and is super healthy
Saying two kissing gouramis in a 40-gallon is "super healthy" is like saying someone who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day is super healthy. Maybe the smoker does seem healthy, up until one day when the doctors find out his lungs are covered in tumors. You might get lucky for a while, but it's a bad situation and you're ignoring that fact because it's not convenient for you.

No that betta wasnt in a bowl it was in a one gallon tank not great but better than a bowl and he moved into the ten gallon within a week.
the fish was in a ten gallon for two years with no filtration or heat ... forgive me for thinking a forty for two with plenty of filtration was ok... and I'm not ignoring them I keep a very close eye on them for ANY signs of aggression.
If you want I can return little Echo but both are fine.

Moving the first gourami from the 10 to the 40 was a good thing. A 40 is still smaller than any credible source will recommend, but an improvement is always good even if it's not perfect - especially since you almost killed the gourami in the 10 because you never vacuumed the gravel (which shows a lack of the most basic understanding of fish care, while we're mentioning it). So you did a good deed. Or, at least you PLANNED to do a good deed, because before you were even able to move the gourami to the 40 you went against the advice of EVERYONE you asked and got a second one. You turned your good deed into a bad deed. You can't claim you didn't know, because you asked and people answered. You have no excuse for this. None whatsoever. You just don't care about the health of your fish or the opinion of people that know what they're talking about, and I'm sick of listening to you claim otherwise. You act on your whims and seek justification later.

it was a spike and you know nothing so think what you will. I got the other gourami for company for him. Do you think I should get rid of Echo? Spots is the most important fish to me we grew up together. I'll do anything to keep him healthy
Brhino
12-26-2010, 03:59 AM
You admitted you never vacuumed the gravel. There was a spike, yes. The spike was because you never vacuumed your gravel. there's really nothing more to say about that.
As for getting a second gourami to keep the first "company", you're assigning human emotions to fish. Some fish do in fact need company or else they will be stressed. Gouramis are not one of those fish. Other fish want their space all to themselves and can potentially become aggressive towards others. Gouramis ARE that kind of fish. You cannot claim you didn't know because you were told this when you asked how many you could keep. Suggesting that a gourami needs company is demonstrating a lack of understanding of fish behavior. Maintaining that opinion it after you've been told otherwise is willful ignorance.
You claim the fish are fine now and that may be true, but you have one adult fish and one baby fish. The situation, which is far from ideal to begin with, will get worse as the baby grows. Are you planning on buying a 150 gallon tank in six months? Somehow I doubt it.
Do I think you should get rid of one of them? Absolutely. You were advised not to get another one. Did you honestly think that advice would change if you ignored it for long enough?
