Ok so I have a snail infestation. The best thing to do is simply take out my discus and put some chemicals in there. Thing is all I have is a 6 gallon to put them in.
1. Is this even a good idea?
2. for how long do I keep them out of their real tank. The chemicals last how long.
3. Will this chemical kill my plants?

You can always battle the snails yourself, put in some food at night, wait an hour or so, and the food will be covered with snails, remove the food, flush the snails, and rinse and repeat, it might not get rid of all the snails, but it'll help with the population.

A couple of assassin snails in there will help as well as decreasing the amount of food put into the tank.

Jack Wattley actually bred a pair in a 6gal one time. As long as it is not for an extended period, and depending on the number of fish you have, it should be find providing you keep on top of very frequent large water changes.

assassin snails breed sexually (ie need male/female pairs) and only lay one egg a month. Much better than a pond snail or something similar that are hermaphrodites and lay scores of eggs at at time.

Awsome!
I have taken your advice and began some research on this "assassin snail"
Turns out adding more snails is the BEST solution! Ironik...
I rather have nature take care of it's self without having me to intervene.
I will get some snails ASAP.
Thank you all. No more need of the 6 gallon.

Clown or Yo-Yo Loach will do the trick.

This might be of some help.... Assassin snail profile i made...
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
I used to breed Assassin snails... i started of with 4 and with a constant supply of snails they layed a single egg about every 1-2 weeks or so.... after a year i had about 40 or so all sizes..... I bred snails in a seperate tank for em to eat.
I mean in a normal tank with regular gravel vacs there is no way they can over populate a tank....
Marc is right... loaches are much better if you have a big enough tank for em.
I have a profile for them too =D.

Clowns get too large, up to a foot. I also wouldn't treat the tank with medication or you may kill your good bacteria. I'd stick with the yoyo's or assassins. I tried killing off my snails before but wee eggs are everywhere including in the filter. You think you have them gone and a month later they've returned.
