Hi all,

I had a few tanks when I was in highschool (quite a few years ago), done my share of breeding both live bearers, betta sp, Paradise fish, gouramis. Twaz a lot of fun. I don't remember being concerned about cycling and Ph levels etc but the fish all turned out fine, only lost a few over the years mainly due to aggressive tank mates and jumpers.

Got back into it about 6 weeks ago with tadpoles from our pool before we shocked it. Bought a 10G for the tadpoles and then another 10G to create a terrarium for the baby tree frogs. I also put some Cherry Barbs in with the tadpoles and they seemed to work out well.

A few weeks ago we bought a used 55G, complete with external fluval 304, heater, fine gravel, pots of some kind and some artificial plants. Also had to take their fish - 3 bala sharks, 2 male sailfin mollies, 1 cory (not sure what type). To that I added the 6 cherry's and after I noticed some hairy algae on the plastic plants a few days ago I picked up a siamese algae eater and a couple of American Flag fish.

After reading through some of the posts I'm expecting to hear that the tank is over crowded.... and I don't know, maybe it is but the fish are not very visible, they're always in/around the plants, the pots... the only fish that are always front and center are the Bala's.

Since the tadpoles have grown, I have 1 free 10G, was thinking of getting some cichlids to try breeding them. Not sure if a 10G is big enough, if not will probably try breeding paradise or gouramis... seemed pretty straight forward with those 15 years ago.:-)

Does anyone have thoughts on the Cichlid breeding in a 10G? Or my potentially overstocked 55G :grin34:

Thanks,

Kevin

Welcome to AC

10 Gallons would probably be too small for breeding most cichlids (and a lot of other fish) but I'm sure you could find a smaller fish that would work out.

other people correct me if i'mwrong but i don't think the tank is overstocked. Also i don't know much about cichlids but i know that they're very teritorial and would be realyl agressive in a 10 gallon.

You probably breed some type of dwarf cichlid in a 10 gallon. I want to breed my
golden dwarf cichlid in a 10 gallon, but I can't have another tank. Also, welcome to the A.c.

Welcome. I also would not have cichlids in a 10 gallon. You may get by with a few rams or a few kribs but not many. Having them stay alive is different from them being happy.

No, I do not think your tank is overstocked unless the balas are large. They DO get about 8-12 inches and need a large tank just for themselves. They are wild swimmers and need lots of room. If they are still small, they are fine. Altho they get along with others, some fish can not take their constant rapid swimming and chasing and they stress others. They also bang into rocks and tank walls so make sure sides of tank have lots of plants.....plastic or otherwise.

Actually the Bala's are about 5"-6" long. Which is a lot larger than any of the other fish in the tank.
