View Full Version : Bolivian Ram Pairing Questions

So, i've had 6 bolivian rams for the past month and a half now, and they're showing great amounts of color, very bright and vibrant, with what appears to be the males with their cheeks starting to have a vibrant reflection of blue. I have yet to have the luck of even getting one pair. I'm wondering if there is any way to encourage pairing. More frequent small water changes? Feeding only bloodworms? Warming or cooling the water?
Anyone can feel free to chime in to help!

6 in a tank? Aren't they supposed to be fighting over territory? Don't worry, they'll form their mating pairs within a year of birth and less. Once they start doing that... you better hope your tank's long enough.

I only plan on keeping one pair in the end. I just got 6 to make sure that i would at least get one pair.

cooler water helps, im in america and not on the metric system but a 5 degree drop in water temp usually is enough to set them into spawning mode(as this is the effect of cool rains in the amazon at breeding season)
Be careful, I had bought a dozen GBR's and gold rams for my 210, one female gold ram killed every other ram in the tank then turned on my huge male discus, he killed her when he got fed up with her territorial aggression.

No expert here but I actually do the same thing except with my heater. 1 day before I turn up from 80-82 to 86 degrees for 1-2 days and then put it back down to normal. It almost always produces eggs out of the females. Now as far as pairing... maybe I am lucky but I got 2 males, i put them in a tank and let one be dominant. I then took out the subdom male to another tank and went to the lfs, found 2 females about ready to pop and poof had two pair.
